The cup was passed around the table that night,
And bread was broken by soft candlelight.
The disciples were merry, not a worry around,
Till their Master spoke words and to them did astound.
Silence filled the room as they focused their eyes
Upon their Lord while from the table He did arise.
“Ye know not what is meant when I say,
the wine is My blood in just a few days.
The bread is My body symbolic of Me,
But after three days of darkness this body will be free.”
Confused and concerned at the words which came forth,
Their voices quickly rose as they questioned their Lord.
Unable to grasp the depth in which He spoke,
They felt they were losing the One with all hope.
Trying to explain and calm their fears,
He knew real understanding would only bring tears.
How hard it must have been as they watched Him submit,
To the soldiers that day wondering, “Could this be it?”
As time rolled by and He hung on a tree
Their eyes were opened and knew it must be
The meaning of what their Savior had said,
That night at the table when He broke the bread.
Scripture: “While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples saying. “Take and eat, this is my body.” Then He took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” Matthew 26:26-28 NIV
Prayer: Lord, open the eyes of my understanding to the full impact of what You did for me on the cross.
Reminder: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 NIV
This poem comes from my poetry devotional book Good Ole Spiritual Food. Though it may be simple and from the early days before I seriously began writing, it’s depth is meant to be thought provoking. If you were at the table that night when Jesus broke the bread what would your reaction have been? Think about it.
Blessings,
Loretta

Awesome. It makes me think of what I would do if I were there that night when Jesus broke bread with the disciples.

Thank you Michelle. Sometimes we are quick to say what we’d do in certain situations, but in reality most of us would respond as the disciples did.

Awesome post! I don’t think the disciples grasped everything until after his Resurrection, Peter maybe not. until Jesus restored him.

Thank you Patricia. Had I been there I don’t think I would have understood. Since I like to keep peace I’m certain I would try to figure out how to resolve the situation without the cross. Good thing I wasn’t there, Jesus would have rebuked me.

Beautiful, Loretta! I’m afraid I would probably have reacted the same as the disciples did. 🙁

I know Dar, I’d be right there with you. Yikes.
