Almost every family has one specific person who keeps the spirit of family alive. He or she serves as the stability of family unity, the one who strives to keep peace and harmony active. The one who offers unconditional love and unlimited forgiveness. The one who goes the extra mile to make us feel special. The one who gives even when there’s nothing left to give.
This spirit of family is as a grain of salt when compared to the all-powerful Spirit of God. There may be one person in each family who seems to shine above the rest, but the truth is, we all shine in our special ways. The more we love and extend love the more we exemplify the Spirit of God.
I John 4:7-8 (NIV) states, “Let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
As I stare at the empty chair in my living room, I am reminded of loved ones who once occupied that space. Loved ones who, not only passed on the love within our family, but they passed on a legacy of God’s love.
The spirit of family extends further than the walls of our homes. Through Christ we are bound by His love. This little song says it best:
Bind us together, Lord, bind us together,
With cords that cannot be broken.
Bind us together, Lord
Bind us together
Bind us together with love.
Christmas is a season where we are reminded to extend love by giving to others. New Year’s brings on new resolutions in hopes of becoming a better person. Then, Valentine’s day approaches and once again “love is in the air.”
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the love of God overflowed the giving spirit within each of us, made us better people so His love would permeate the air and the true spirit of family-God’s family, flowed freely throughout the world?
Blessings,
Loretta
