This cleverly plotted novel kept me turning the page. Every time I thought I knew who the villain was, a twist kicked in and took me in another direction. The characters were well-rounded and the story believable.
Ainsley Beaumont, Investigative Services Branch Ranger, takes the lead on investigating the murder of a pregnant teenager inside the Natchez Trace Park. Her heart plummets when Lincoln Steele, former FBI turned Interpretive Ranger and former old flame, shows up to assist with the investigation at the request of a superior.
Guilt haunts Lincoln after almost killing a kid during his FBI days, which causes him to hesitate pulling the trigger to protect his best friend who was wounded and later died. He shelves his gun and refuses to pick it back up, which puts him in an unsafe predicament when someone targets Ainsley and starts shooting. Can he overcome his uncertainty over carrying his weapon? Could Ainsley ever allow him back in her life?
Ainsley appreciates Lincoln’s skills as they work through the investigation, but she can’t forget nor forgive how he betrayed her years ago. Once she finds the killer, she plans to leave town if she’s still alive.
