Can you imagine the disciples’ confusion as they sat at the table with Jesus, listening to him explain the life-changing event that was about to take place? How he would willingly surrender his life so we could be forgiven and have eternal life? He’d be beaten, hung on a cross, and die, but three days later, he would rise again?
In this simple poem, let’s imagine we’re in the room where they gathered that night and what may have happened when he broke the bread.
The cup was passed around the table that night,
Bread was broken by soft candlelight.
The disciples were merry, not a worry around,
Until their Master spoke words and to them did astound.
Silence filled the room as they focused their eyes
Upon their Lord while from the table he did arise.
“Ye know not what is meant when I say,
The wine is My blood in just a few days.
The bread is My body, symbolic of me,
But after three days of darkness, this body will be free.”
Confused and concerned as His words spilled forth,
Their voices rose as they questioned their Lord.
Unable to grasp the depth in which He spoke
They felt they were losing the One with all hope.
Trying to explain and calm their fears,
He knew real understanding would only bring tears.
How hard it must have been as they watched Him submit,
To the soldiers that day, wondering, “Could this be it?”
As time rolled by and He hung on a tree,
Their eyes were opened, and they knew it must be
The meaning of what their Savior had said,
That night at the table when He broke the bread.
“And when he had given thanks, he brake it (the bread), and said, ‘Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you; this do in remembrance of me.’ After the same manner, he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, ‘this cup is the new testament in my blood; this do ye, as often as ye drink it, in remembrance of me’ I Corinthians 11:24-25.
Prayer: Lord, open the eyes of our understanding to the full impact of what YOU did for us on the cross.”
